Jones, Skelton & Hochuli is pleased to announce that one of our 2019 summer law clerks, Anne-Grace Reule, and her partner Jennifer Adams, have won the 2019 Jenckes Cup Closing Argument Competition. Third-year ASU Law students Anne-Grace and Jenny competed against a team from the University of Arizona College of Law on November 8. This marks the third year that the Sun Devils won the Cup, with Anne-Grace and Jenny also prevailing in the competition last year. Two weeks before the competition, student teams receive a transcript of a closed case that went to court, minus the closing arguments. The students then craft their own closing arguments, and argue against each other before a panel of 40 trial attorneys who are members of the Arizona Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Students were mentored by attorneys from multiple Arizona firms, including JSH attorneys Keith Collett, Patrick Gorman, John Masterson, Kimberly Page, David Potts, Clarissa Reiman, Erica Spurlock and Erik Stone.

The Jenckes Closing Argument Competition is sponsored and judged by members of the Arizona Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL), and is named for the late Joseph S. Jenckes, an alum of ACTL and prominent Phoenix attorney. The annual competition hosts teams from two of Arizona’s state universities, the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU and the James E. Rogers College of Law at U of A.

The firm is a proud supporter of the event and ACTL. JSH partner Georgia Staton is serving her third year as Chair of the Arizona Chapter of ACTL, after serving for three years as Vice Chair. ACTL is an invitation-only fellowship of exceptional trial lawyers who demonstrate the very highest standards of trial advocacy. Membership does not exceed 1% of the total lawyer population of any state or province. JSH is proud to have five lawyers as Fellows of this prestigious group, including Steve Bullington, Mel McDonald, Russ Skelton, Phil Stanfield and Georgia Staton.
